I kunstnergruppen ARKIVETs nyeste utstilling «By Chance» på Galleri Lerverk, Gøteborg, Sverige leker de fire kunstnerne segmed arbeider som på hvert sitt vis refererer til det tilfeldige, det ikke planlagte. Tilfeldigheter betyr hendelser som skjer uten at vi kan forutsi dem; noe som skjer uforutsigbart uten merkbar menneskelig intensjon eller observerbar årsak som har vært med på å dirigere motivasjonen.
Når kunstnere arbeider med et bevisst bruk av ferdigheter for å frembringe sine intensjoner, vil det å arbeide med tilfeldigheter kunne oppleves konfliktfylt. Men kunstfaglig utvikling består gjerne av utprøving, testing, feiling og spekulasjon. Kan man la omstendigheter og tilfeldige hendelser bestemme utviklingen og utfallet? Eller åpner problemstillingen opp for helt nye impulser og innfallsvinkler? Er det mulig å forene det tilfeldige og uforutsigbare med kunstnerisk identitet?
In the artist group ARKIVET’s latest exhibition “By Chance” at Galleri Lerverk, Gothenburg, Sweden, the four artists play, in each their way, with works that each refer to the random, the unplanned. Coincidence means events that happen without being able to predict them; something that happens acceadently or random, without any discernible human intention or observable cause that has helped direct the motivation.
When artists work with a conscious use of skills to produce their intentions, working with chance can be experienced as conflicting. But artistic development often consists of trial, testing, error and speculation. Can circumstances and random events determine the development and outcome? Or does the theme open up completely new impulses and approaches? Is it possible to unite the random and unpredictable with artistic identity?
